A fresh blast of wintry weather is set to hit Britain over the next few days bringing more snow and icy conditions, with London and the South East worst affected, forecasters say.

The Met Office warned there could be heavy snow in the capital and south-east England on Thursday and Friday, with as much as 5ins (15cm) on high ground.

Forecasters said the chilly weather would last into the weekend, but would not be a return to the weather chaos of last month.

The resurgence of bitter weather has raised questions about the supplies of salt to grit roads, a major problem during the last icy blast around Christmas.

David Sparks, of the Local Government Association, said councils would continue to 'work tirelessly' to keep roads safe and to make sure essential services functioned.
